প্রথমে headline এবং subheadline পড়ো। এগুলো article-এর মূল থিম সম্পর্কে ধারণা দেয়। এরপর যখন পুরো article পড়তে যাবে, তখন already main idea সম্পর্কে ধারণা থাকবে এবং বাকিটা পুরোটা বোঝা অনেক সহজ হবে।

এখানে headline এবং subheadline পড়েই বোঝা যাচ্ছে যে গ্যাসের দাম বৃদ্ধির কারণ উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে এবং দুর্নীতির প্রভাব সম্পর্কে বলা হয়েছে। তাই শিরোনাম এবং উপশিরোনাম পড়ে বোঝা যাচ্ছে যে, “graft” শব্দটি ‘corruption’ এর সাথে সম্পর্কযুক্ত; আর “curbed” শব্দটি ‘reduced’ এর সাথে সম্পর্কযুক্ত।

Step 2: একটা ছোটো Paragraph বেছে নাও (Pick a Small Paragraph)

তোমার newspaper পড়ার অভ্যাস শুরু করার জন্য প্রথমে পুরো article পড়ার দরকার নেই। Instead, একটা ছোটো paragraph বেছে নাও। ছোটো অংশ থেকে শুরু করলে concentrate করা সহজ হবে এবং unfamiliar words থেকেও মনোযোগ হারাবে না।

এখন পুরো paragraph না পড়ে শুধু এই অংশটুকু পড়ো। unfamiliar শব্দ ignore করে sentence-এর মূল অর্থ বোঝার চেষ্টা করো। যেমন, "costlier" মানে ব্যয়বহুল হয়ে যাচ্ছে এবং "production cost for manufacturing drugs" মানে ওষুধ তৈরির খরচ বেড়ে যাচ্ছে, "hike in gas and power charges" মানে গ্যাস ও বিদ্যুতের দাম বৃদ্ধির ফলে এই পরিস্থিতি সৃষ্টি হয়েছে।

Step 3: Simple Sentences খুঁজে বার করো (Look for Simple Sentences)

Newspaper-এর অনেক article-এ complex sentences থাকে যেগুলো পড়তে সময় লাগে। এজন্য simple sentences খুঁজে সেগুলো দিয়ে শুরু করো। প্রথমে যা সহজ বোঝা যায় সেখান থেকে পড়া শুরু করলে confidence বাড়বে।

উদাহরণস্বরূ:

“The minister visited the flood-affected areas yesterday.”

এটা সহজ বাক্য, যা সহজেই বোঝা যায়। আগে এই ধরনের বাক্য পড়া practice করো, তারপর ধীরে ধীরে complex বাক্যে চলে যেও।

Step 4: Context Clues ব্যবহার করো (Use Context Clues)

English newspaper-এর কোনো sentence যদি বুঝতে সমস্যা হয়, তাহলে context clues ব্যবহার করতে হবে। Context clues মানে sentence-এর আশেপাশের শব্দ দেখে guess করা যে unfamiliar word-এর meaning কি হতে পারে।

উদাহরণস্বরূপ, The Financial Express থেকে:

এখানে "grappling" শব্দটা যদি না বুঝো, বাক্যের বাকি অংশ থেকে বোঝা যাচ্ছে যে বিদ্যুৎ সমস্যা নিয়ে জনজীবন কঠিন অবস্থায় আছে। অর্থাৎ, "grappling" মানে হচ্ছে সংগ্রাম করা।

উদাহরণস্বরূপ, The Business Standard থেকে:

“Implementing a strategic approach to maximise the potential of remittances offers a pathway to accelerate the recovery of the financial sector.” - Source

এখানে "accelerate" শব্দটি যদি না বোঝা যায়, বাক্যের বাকিটা পড়ে বোঝা যাচ্ছে যে এটি recovery-র গতি বাড়াতে সহায়তা করবে। অর্থাৎ "accelerate" মানে হলো ত্বরান্বিত করা।

Step 5: Unknown Word কে Ignore করো, শুধু Meaning বোঝার চেষ্টা করো (Ignore Unknown Words at First)

অনেক সময় আমরা newspaper পড়ার সময় নতুন শব্দ দেখলেই হোঁচট খাই এবং রিডিংয়ের fluency হারাই। এটা avoid করতে unknown words ignore করে পুরো বাক্যের general meaning বুঝার চেষ্টা করো।

“Despite the inclement weather, the event continued without any disruptions.”

এখানে "inclement" শব্দটা অজানা হলেও বাক্যের মূল কথা হলো event চালু ছিল কোনো disruption ছাড়া। তাই "inclement" মানে পুরো বুঝা না গেলেও বাক্যের meaning বুঝা যাচ্ছে।

Step 6: Translate to Bangla in Your Mind (নিজের মনে বাংলা অনুবাদ করো)

যখন newspaper পড়ছো, unfamiliar sentence-এর rough Bengali translation নিজের মনে করে নিতে পারো। এতে করে unfamiliar phrases বা expressions সহজে মনে থাকবে।

উদাহরণস্বরূপ:

“The new regulations aim to enhance transparency in the banking sector.”

এটা নিজের মনে translate করতে পারো—"নতুন নিয়মগুলো ব্যাংকিং সেক্টরে স্বচ্ছতা বাড়ানোর উদ্দেশ্যে করা হয়েছে।" এতে unfamiliar phrases মনের মধ্যে সহজে গেঁথে থাকবে।

Step 7: Dictionary Use করার সঠিক পদ্ধতি (Proper Use of Dictionary)

Dictionary ব্যবহার smartly করতে হবে।

যেমন:

এখানে "expedite" শব্দটা কি হতে পারে? Guess করার চেষ্টা করো—তাদের কাজ ত্বরান্বিত করা হচ্ছে। তারপর dictionary-তে চেক করে confirm হও।
