Adverb - ক্রিয়াবিশেষণ

An adverb is a word used to modify the meaning of a verb, an adjective, or another adverb within a sentence, providing additional information or clarification.

 

In other words, an adverb is a part of speech that modifies or describes a verb, an adjective, another adverb, or entire clause. অর্থাৎ Adverb একটি verb, একটি adjective, অন্য একটি adverb বা একটি পুরো clause কে modify করতে পারে।

 

Alternatively, we can say, ‘A verb, an adjective, another adverb, or a clause can all have their meaning modified or described by an adverb.

অর্থাৎ, Adverb একটি verb, একটি adjective, অন্য একটি adverb, বা পুরো clause-এর অর্থ বা গুণাগুণ পরিবর্তন বা বর্ণনা করে।

Adverbs often answer questions such as how, when, where, why, or to what extent. They provide additional information about

  • the action of a verb or
  • the qualities of an adjective.
  • the intensities of another adverb

Examples – modifying a verb (or providing additional information about the action of a verb):

  • Native speakers learn English
  • We are learning slowly.
  • Everyone learns gradually.
  • Wake up early.
  • Do not speak loudly.

In the above examples, “quickly,” “slowly,” “gradually,” “early,” and “loudly,” are all adverbs modifying the verbs “learn,” “are learning,” “learns,” “wake up,” and “speak,” respectively.

 

Examples – modifying an adjective (or providing additional information about the qualities of an adjective):

  • The movie is quite interesting.
  • That man is very

In these examples, “quite,” and “very” are all adverbs modifying the adjectives “interesting,” and “honest,” respectively.

 

Examples – modifying another adverb (or providing additional information about the intensities of another adverb):

  • A cheetah runs very quickly.
  • She dances rather gracefully.

In these examples, “very,” and “rather” are all adverbs modifying the adverbs “quickly,” and “gracefully,” respectively.
